Love the festivals in Hinsdale, IL? Head to Burlington Park!
One of the really wonderful things about living in Hinsdale, without a doubt, is the parks! With 19 parks totaling over 130 acres, there is no better way to get out into the fresh air, enjoy the scenery, and get some exercise!
And while Katherine Legge Memorial Park boasts the most activities–disc golf, a playground, picnic shelters, tennis courts, and the historic Katherine Legge Memorial Lodge, to name just a few– it would be a shame to miss out on her sister park, Burlington Park.
Burlington Park Wide Open Space
Just north of the Burlington train station in Hinsdale’s beautiful downtown district, you will find 1.8 acres of sprawling open space between Garfield and Washington Streets on Chicago Avenue. Burlington Park, full of old, established trees and marked with mulit-use paths, is brimming with families, walkers, joggers, and bikers enjoying the space. You will find people sitting around a beautiful fountain and children playing around it. Incidentally, the fountain was damaged in 2016, and because the people of Hinsdale loved it so much, they found the money in their budget to replace it with a more modern version the very next year. And one of the best things about it, this park knows how to party!
Party time at Burlington Park
Burlington Park is the place to be all year round, so let’s start with the opening event!
Starting in June and running through October, the Hinsdale Farmer’s Market takes up residence on Mondays from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Burlington Park. People come from all over the area to visit the stalls of over 25 local farmers, food artisans, and artists. And the way the market is organized leaves for lovely cross-breezes between the stalls, so even on a hot summer day, it feels great.
Also in June, Burlington Park hosts the annual Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival–going strong and well-reviewed for over 40 years. This year, the juried art festival takes place on June 8th and 9th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Bring the kids to enjoy special activities just for them, music, and giveaways. The festival will showcase over 130 artists this year, so there is sure to be something for every artistic preference.
And of course you can’t miss the famous Sidewalk Sale that pops up every July near Burlington Park. Head out to the downtown district on July 12th and 13th this year to find great deals in front of the downtown merchants’ shops and wander over the the park for more.
Summertime also brings us Uniquely Thursdays in June, July, and August from 6:oo p.m. to 9:00 p.m., a great opportunity to hear local musicians and sample yummy food from the food trucks. Now in its 16th year, the free concert series encourages attendees to bring chairs and blankets and visit the food vendors, who also sell beer and wine. Just don’t bring any outside alcohol. Event organizers are still accepting applications from musicians and bands, so the line-up should be out soon. If you are interested in what type of music they featured last year, check out this review.
And in the winter time, Burlington Park is the place to begin and end your Christmas Walk. The first Friday each year, business owners open up after hours to help you get a jump on your shopping and getting into the holiday spirit. At the park, you will find giveaways, live music, and ice carvers. Delight the children by pointing out the costume characters roaming around, letting them take a ride on the trackless train, and swirl around with them on the 30-foot holiday carousel!
Burlington Park even hosts Chamber events like the Hinsdale Human Society Grand Opening Reveal. Back in September of last year, when the Humane Society was getting ready to re-open, the organization amped up the excitement by hosting a party during which they revealed the theme for their grand opening.
